Open Classes in Carbondale

Keep dancing. Build strength. Explore new styles in a supportive, adult-only studio. Classes run weekly. Rotating genres refresh every four weeks. Taught by our local Carbondale instructor team.

Who these classes serve

  • Adults with some prior dance experience or comfort in movement.

  • Newer dancers who want options for success. Instructors offer level-ups and level-downs in every class.

  • If you want a true beginner path, start with the Beginning Ballet Program.

Class Descriptions

Ballet (Open/Continuing)

Refine technique. Improve alignment, strength, and musicality. Class includes barre, center, and across-the-floor work. Not a beginner class. Success options offered for different experience levels. Ideal after our Beginning Ballet Program or for adults returning to ballet.

What to wear: fitted activewear or dancewear, ballet flats or socks.

Strength & Stability (All Levels)

Condition for control. Build strength, balance, and body awareness through targeted exercises for the feet, ankles, calves, and core. Focus on alignment, stability, and mobility to support every style of movement from dance to daily life.

What to wear: comfortable activewear, socks, or bare feet.

Jazz (All Levels)

Clean lines. Dynamic movement. Across-the-floor combinations and a short combo each week. Focus on coordination, turns, and performance quality. Success options provided to meet you where you are.

What to wear: breathable activewear, jazz shoes or socks.

Contemporary (All Levels)

Expressive movement rooted in technique. Flow, weight shifts, and phrase work. Floorwork offered with alternatives if you prefer to stay standing. Build control and artistry while exploring musicality.

What to wear: comfortable activewear, bare feet or socks.

Modern (All Levels)

Grounded technique, shape, and release. Travel through space with clarity and control. Strength, balance, and expressive phrasing. Options provided for different experience levels.

What to wear: comfortable activewear, bare feet.

Lydia Craft is a dedicated dancer and choreographer celebrated for her expressive artistry and thoughtful instruction. With 17 years of training—rooted in ballet and enriched by jazz, modern, contemporary, and musical theater—she brings both technical precision and creative flair to every class. Currently pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences at Southern Illinois University, Lydia also serves as Costume Coordinator and choreographer for the Southern Illinois Dance Company. Her goal at The Dance Barre is to inspire confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation for dance in every student.

Hannah Craft began dancing at age four and has performed in productions including The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Her teaching philosophy is simple: ballet is for everyone. Hannah believes each dancer brings something unique to the studio, and she’s passionate about helping adults find confidence and joy through movement. Her classes emphasize patience, alignment, and personal growth—creating a space where new and returning dancers alike can thrive.

A lifelong student of dance, Kristin trains in ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, and Latin. She brings a joyful, adult-centered approach to every class.

Kristin Hurst is a lifelong student of dance with training in ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, and Latin dance, but classical ballet has always held a special place in her heart. She has three years of experience teaching ballet to students of all ages and skill levels. As an adult, Kristin has continued to dance recreationally and perform with studios across the country—an experience that brings both joy and meaning to her life. At The Dance Barre Carbondale, she’s excited to share that joy with other adults who are ready to embark on their own dance journey.

Payton brings 17 years of experience in ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, and musical theater. Her supportive, encouraging approach helps adults focus on progress over perfection.

Payton Regan brings more than 17 years of dance experience across ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, and musical theater. A History major and Mythology minor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Payton combines her academic curiosity with her passion for performance and community. She serves as Secretary of the Southern Illinois Dance Company and performs with the Marching Salukis Color Guard. Her background in education and choreography informs a teaching style that’s supportive, encouraging, and focused on progress over perfection.
